EV Charger Installation in Grafton
A dedicated, properly protected charger beats the granny lead that came in the boot.

The portable lead that came with your car works, but it is slow and it was never intended as a permanent daily solution. A hardwired wall charger on a dedicated circuit will fill most vehicles overnight comfortably, safely, and without tying up a general power point. We install them across Grafton and the surrounding area, and because we are also a Level 2 ASP, we can handle a supply upgrade too if your property needs one.

What your property can actually support
Before choosing a charger, we check what your supply can carry.
Single-phase, 7kW. the right answer for the large majority of homes. Adds roughly 40 kilometres of range per hour, so an overnight charge covers far more than most people drive in a day. Most Grafton homes can support this without any supply upgrade.
Three-phase, 11 or 22kW. only if your property already has three-phase, or if you have another strong reason to convert. Genuinely useful for two EVs, a business, or very high daily distances — but for a single household car it is usually paying for speed you will sleep through anyway.
The honest advice: for most people a 7kW single-phase charger is more than sufficient. Do not let anyone sell you a supply upgrade you do not need.
What the installation involves
- Switchboard assessment — spare capacity, existing load, and whether an upgrade is needed first
- Dedicated circuit from the board to the charger, correctly sized for the run
- Correct RCD protection — EV charging has specific requirements around DC fault current, and this is a detail cheap installations get wrong
- Cable route from board to parking position — usually the main cost driver
- Charger mounting at a sensible height, positioned so the lead reaches your car's port without being stretched across a walkway
- Load management where the supply is tight — a charger that throttles when the house is drawing heavily can avoid a supply upgrade entirely
- Commissioning and a CCEW
That load management option is worth asking about. On a property where the supply is marginal, it is frequently much cheaper than upgrading the mains.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special charger for my electric car?
Not strictly — the portable lead works. But a dedicated wall charger is faster, safer for daily use and does not tie up a general power point. It is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone driving an EV regularly.
How fast is a 7kW home charger?
Roughly 40 kilometres of range per hour, so an overnight charge adds far more than most people drive in a day. For a single household car it is plenty.
Do I need three-phase for an EV charger?
Almost never for a single car. Single-phase 7kW suits the large majority of homes. Three-phase is worth it for two EVs, a business or very high daily distances.
Will my switchboard handle an EV charger?
Often yes, especially on newer homes. Older boards may need an upgrade first. Where the supply is tight, a load-managing charger can avoid an upgrade entirely — ask us about it.
Can I charge from my solar?
Yes, and it is where the real savings are. Some chargers modulate to match surplus solar generation. Whether it is worth it depends on your system, your tariff and whether you are home during the day.
Byron Ryder and his team at Ryder Air and Electrical are straight up brilliant. I have had two jobs done by Byron, and both were carried out perfectly. Our farm is 35km out of Grafton and Byron didn't have any problem both times in sorting it out for us.
A wonderful job installing my air conditioner. Left the site spotless and clean, would highly recommend. A very friendly manner and easy to talk to while also being professional.
Provided me an onsite quote and was able to do the work in a timely manner. Cleaned up the work site and did a very clean install on a split system for me. I will be using and recommending in the future.
