What an old board cannot do
A rewireable ceramic fuse does one job: it melts if the current through a circuit exceeds its rating for long enough. That protects the wiring in your walls from overheating. It is genuinely useful and it is not enough.
What it does not do is detect current leaking to earth — through a faulty appliance, through damaged insulation, or through a person. An RCD detects an imbalance of around 30 milliamps and disconnects in under 300 milliseconds. That is the margin between a nasty shock and a fatal one.
The other problem with old boards is capacity. They were built for a house with a fridge, a kettle and a television. A modern home has air conditioning, an induction cooktop, a dishwasher, a dryer, a home office and increasingly a car charger. Old boards get added to piecemeal for decades until there is no room, no spare capacity and no clear record of what feeds what.
Signs yours is due
